It has been a slow Garden Moments roll this year. But steady.

April was a bit of a disappointment. The cold, dreary weather just did not want to let go of its angry grip. I admit it frustrated the heck out of my big wish for more Garden Moments.

But gardening patience in early spring in the midwest is a lesson well learned.

Because of the less-than-lovely weather, my garden play was still relegated to cleaning up the yard, potting various arbs for more design, privacy and landscape impact, and adding seasonal wreaths to the porch and fence. And more than one trip to garden centers and admiring other people’s yellow tulips and golden forsythia along the way.

And that’s okay. I really don’t get excited fighting high humidity and heat when starting up the garden engines for real. I like it a bit cooler when I doing the dirtier prep work.

I just wish it had not been so cold and snowy. Our summer season is short enough without losing the entire month of April to winter. Hoping for more from May.

That said, I’ve still been able to get dirt under my tough fingers, while plotting warmer-weather strategy and playing outside a bit more, something that always feels good after being stuck inside on too many super cold, dark, and snowy winter days.

Today, we welcome in the glorious month of May! My favorite month of the year, in part, because of all the beautiful blooms/bouquets soon to come, chirping birds and buzzing bees, and the reappearance of several birdies that enthusiastically sing their seasonal tunes loudly. And I do mean loudly.

But the aviary choir always does my heart good, and I always stop to listen.

May is also my birthday month, and who doesn’t love celebrating a day meant just for them, with lots of cake!! Looking forward to that.

In the meantime, here are a few images of things that I did manage to get done this week in between all the cold and rain. True gardeners are a hardy bunch.

My mama taught me well.

Much, much more delightful beauty to come. I’m crushing on May.

How about you?

Have you been working on your summer yard already, too?
