Like much of the country, the Midwest has been baking under hot temps and worse humidity, making it difficult to spend much time celebrating sacred Garden Moments during the tough heat of the day.

Whew!

Instead, I head outside very early (and set an even earlier sprinkler) to get the plants well watered so they can survive the rest of the brutal-weather day.

That’s a key theme for July. Survival. For me and my precious posies.

Deadhead, water, replace some plants that couldn’t quite handle the heat.

Repeat.

It’s the time when I spend more time keeping plants alive than fully enjoying my Garden Moments. This week was also when I finally got to plant some of my earlier purchases that had been waiting for a cooldown planting.

Better late than never.

So is the story of July. Dodge heat , humidity, and annoying pests, too.

My diligence has paid off. My plants are thriving. But I can’t let up for moment.

This is when and why my gardener’s thoughts begin to turn to fall.

Oops.

Sorry, not sorry.

I hate high humidity most of all, and I miss the more normal summers of my youth, when it seemed like the weather wasn’t quite as brutal and we relished spending days outside from early morning until the Lightning Bugs showed up and showed off.

At least that’s my positive childhood recollection.

How is your garden holding up during this intense summer heat/humidity?

And you?

Thank God for air conditioning and water access.
